The People in the Magazines

(Words and Music by Andy Vargo)

In your high rise
In Birmingham
You’d leaf through the pages
Of the magazines
And stare at the faces
Smiling out at you
So faultless and clean
You were sixteen
A face that didn’t fit
High on TV advertising
And Hollywood videos
Of the latest group
You drank yourself to sleep
On the cliché of youth
And so you decided
To become just like those people in the magazines

You’re just like the people in the magazines
You’re gonna go far
You’ll be a big star
You’re just like the people in the magazines
You’ll smile your smile
And for a while
You’ll be just what you always wanted to be
They said you’d need surgery

An image for people to relate to
If you really wanna look like
Those people in the magazines
You’d need to be a professional
On time for all the castings
With your portfolio
And they said
‘Try not to take rejection personally’
‘Oh, and we’d need some money’
And they made a nervous joke about bolemia
Where supermodels are showbiz personalities on TV

You’re just like the people in the magazines
You’re gonna go far
You’ll drive a big car
You’re just like the people in the magazines
You’ll smile your smile
And for a while
You’ll be just what you always wanted to be
